How to Capture Family Memories with just Your iPhone.
As parents, we are constantly seeking to cherish the fleeting moments of childhood. Our phones are always by our side, a tool that I have a complex relationship with, yet I appreciate the convenience of having a camera at my fingertips. By making a few adjustments to how we take photos with our phones, a simple snapshot can transform into a cherished memory captured beautifully.
So let’s dive in to some tips and tricks that can help you out!
Be Present
I understand this may seem basic, but it's crucial to be fully present. I've witnessed countless parents at the park missing out on special moments because they're engrossed in their phones. They're unaware of the real magic unfolding around them.
Here's my top advice: keep your phone in your back pocket and immerse yourself in the moment with your kids. When you spot something wonderful unfolding, take out your phone, frame it, capture the moment, and then put your phone away.
Clean & Settings
Many times, I find myself disappointed by a poor picture, only to later realize it's due to a huge smudge on my phone camera. Fingerprints, sticky hands, and even dog noses are common culprits in my household. Just ensure to wipe them off – a corner of your shirt usually works well.
Using your cameras grid feature can act as a guide! To activate the grid feature on your iPhone, navigate to Settings > Camera > and toggle on Your Grid. This simple step can enhance your photos by adhering to the rule of thirds for better composition. The grid lines on your screen can guide you in placing your subject for a more engaging image instead of always centering it.
Consider turning on your level feature, although it's not necessary. I find it helpful because I often struggle with holding my phone straight.
Get Down On Their Level
We often have numerous photos looking down at our children, which can be adorable, but it's essential not to have all your photos from this angle. Instead, squat down and meet them at eye level to see the world as they see it. Check out the above pictures from the same moment, but with a different perspective.
For a different perspective on capturing low angles, try flipping your phone upside down. This way, your camera will be closest to the ground, allowing you to achieve distinctive and captivating angles!
Turn On Live Photos
Live photos are truly magical and, in my opinion, one of the most amazing features on smartphones. This feature allows you to capture a couple of seconds within a single image. You can then later review and select the best frame. This innovation is a game-changer, especially for capturing photos of squirmy kids!
To make adjustments, open the live photo you want to modify. Tap on Edit at the top right corner. Then, at the bottom of the screen, tap on Live. This action will lead you to a screen where you can slide and select the main picture frame. Isn't that amazing?!
As much as having a professional photographer with you constantly would be ideal for capturing every moment, I understand it's not actually feasible. Therefore, I hope these tips can help you in enhancing your phone camera skills and preserving unforgettable memories!
